:: The First Amendment ::
An essay about free speach that I wrote for english.
The First Amendment
The right to free speech was the first freedom mentioned in the first amendment. Is our country’s government beginning to obstruct our abilities to act out this freedom? Censorship and public views are beginning to threaten the united state’s abilities to free speech. According to the first amendment, congress can’t make laws against religions or prohibiting your right to exercise your religion. They also can’t disrupt your right to free speech or the press’ right to free speech unless if it puts some one else in danger. The government also can’t deny a group of people’s right to assemble peacefully, or the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
The government contradicts our rights in the first amendment by censorship. Censorship is any government restrictions on speech or writing; or broadly, government restrictions on forms of artistic expression. By definition censorship is denying us of our rights to free speech. One of my friend’s brothers got suspended from school for reading a book by Stephen King that had the subject of Satanism in it, which is going against the right to choose your own free religion and practice it freely and openly. Children are being denied of books because they have been banned because they have “bad religions” (Which adults consider as Satanism, Wicca, Atheism, etc.) in them. Is there ever going to be an end to the obstructions to our rights that were given to us by the first amendment?
Our government is taking all of our rights away and leaving us with small bits and pieces of what we’re allowed to do. Our country will slowly turn totalitarian if the government keeps disrespecting our views and ignoring our rights. Nazi Germany was ruled by a totalitarian government, which is an extreme form of dictatorship. Books shouldn’t be banned and we should have the right to speak up for what we believe in, as well as being able to be which religion we want to be, and think what we want to think. Isn’t this why we immigrated here in the first place? So we could have these freedoms?
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.“ Is the first Amendment on the Bill of Rights. It states that congress can’t make laws against what religion you are, what you say and do (if it doesn’t cause mortal harm to others), what the press says, if you can assemble peacefully, or your right to protest.
Dwight D. Eisenhower states, “Don't join the burners. Don't be afraid to go to your library and read every book, as long as any document does not offend your own ideas of decency; that should be your only censorship.” This means that the only person who should choose what you can read or see or watch is YOURSELF, the government shouldn’t be able to make YOUR choices for you!

I'm Jackie. I've got a lot of interests including (but not only these...) Music, Art, and Psychology, mainly the line of criminal profiling. I really don't like conservative people, and activists. I don't like extremes in general, for example, I don't like it being hot, I don't like it being cold either. I don't appreciate steriotypes, and I don't respect people who just say they deserve your respect, you have to earn it. My favorite bands are System of a Down, Dark Tranquility, and probably Nirvana. Oh, and the Homophobic Lesbians (my band).
